REVIEW: BET Awards 2015

Last night was the 2015 BET Awards, and it was definitely a great show! This year marked the 15th anniversary of the awards as well. During the pre-show, hosted by Terrence J and La La Anthony, we got to see some retro moments from the shows over the years which was cool to see. We also saw stars hit the red carpet and the style suite, as well as performances from MGK, Natalie Rose, Jeremih, and others. I really only watch the pre-show to check out the interviewers' skills, to be honest, but it was a decent prelude to the actual show.

Last night's BET Awards 2015 was definitely a great show packed with great performances and moments (review coming soon), but less actual announcements of the awards themselves! Close to 2/3 of this list wasn't announced last night at all that I could see. However, we have found out who exactly took home which awards, and have a full list of winners for you below!

RECAP: "Dust In The Wind"-The Game S9, E4

This final season of The Game is really going by fast! Picking up from last week, Tasha leads the eulogy at her father's funeral (at Phatty's?! Fitting, I guess). Malik attempts to read a passage from the Bible, but struggles get through it. Not because he's overcome with emotion, but because he actually gets the words all jumbled. Tasha goes up to try to support him, but Jason calls out the fact that Malik can't read in front of everyone! Tasha then asks Chardonnay comes up to sing a little song to try to continue the service.

Nas Pens Open Letter To America

Nas took to his Instagram page to speak on America, speaking out on what he feels needs to be done in order to create a better nation:

"America has spent so much time, money & resources fighting wars abroad and completely fell asleep at the wheel of the war brewing within our cities, neighborhoods & blocks. We are supposed to stand for freedom & equal opportunity. That's supposed to mean MORE than just words but the actions of late just don't speak to what we are supposed to stand for. This is BIGGER than BLACK and WHITE. This is about America selling a false dream. Now we've obviously progressed since the inception of this nation but we took our eye off the ball and it feels as though things are moving backwards. As a black man, I find it difficult to understand that our biggest export (our American culture) comes from us. The people in the streets... The way the world dresses, talks, what they listen to, what they watch... That all comes from us. How can we be the ones responsible for America's biggest export & fear for our lives like we shouldn't belong here. I don't have all the answers nor do I believe anyone does, but we need to have conversations around how to improve as a nation. How do we show any ounce of progress that keeps hope alive. This is too big of a problem to be solved overnight but there needs to be some questions answered to get things back on the track of righteousness. Amazing people died for this country. We owe it to the past, present & future to come together and move this country in the right direction. This is my home just like it is anyone else's. RIP CRISPUS ATTUCKS. NEW MUSIC: "Words"-Lola Godheld

London-based singer Lola Godheld has released her new song "Words," which is featured on her upcoming debut EP Shades of Me!

According to Lola, the record is “about words and how powerful they are, especially when it's words from someone that matters. The Spotlight Celebrates Six Years!

Wow. The Spotlight is six years old today! Six years ago, I was 18, sitting at an internship, bored and feeling the need to just create something. I didn't have a clue what I was really getting into. I just knew that I loved to write and I loved entertainment news. What started out as a hobby turned into a true passion for entertainment writing. It's a LOT of hard work, balancing working full time, other freelance projects, personal life, and running the site. It doesn't come without its share of stress and problems. However, this is what I love, and so I have been consistently working towards it every day.

2015 has been a great year so far for Spotlight. I've taken on two great writers, Smilez and Aubrianna, who have been doing a great job so far. I've been able to talk with more artists, publicists, designers, and more, developing more connections in the industry and featuring more amazing upcoming stars. I've also been working behind the scenes to learn new skills and concepts that I hope to use in the future with the blog and my media career as well. So, as much as it's been great growth for the blog, it's also been great growth for me. I have specific goals this year that I plan to reach for myself and Spotlight and I'm not stopping.

The blog has come far, but still has so far to go. I'm proud of the work that I've put in, and now the work of the blog's other writers. I look forward to the future!

Thank you to everyone for the constant love and support shown! I appreciate it so much!

Stylist Ashley Chin Styles Rap Artist LaLah (Directed by Vanguard House)

Always proud and honored to feature the work of my girl Ashley Chin! Based in Miami, she's definitely grinding and making serious moves. She recently started a marketing company,
Vanguard House, which is working towards representing different clothing brands, directing shoots, etc.

One of VH's most recent projects is an editorial shoot featuring Miami recording artist LaLah, who got her start in the industry back in 2008, and has been building a loyal fan base since! Combining different genres like hip hop, urban pop, and even a bit of rock, LaLah's sound is definitely unique and she has gained much respect in the industry. The rapper has opened for artists like Flo Rida, Mario, Rick Ross, and more. With her talents not only as an artist, but as a songwriter and dancer, LaLah is definitely going far in the game!

The looks for the shoot were styled by Ashley herself as well. Check out the looks from the shoot and LaLah's single "Friday" below!

ALBUM REVIEW: Unbreakable Smile-Tori Kelly

After releasing two EPs and other songs, including popular covers, Tori Kelly is set to release her debut studio album Unbreakable Smile on June 23! I just had the opportunity to see her perform this past weekend, and heard some of her new songs, so I had to review the album for the blog.

Seeing Tori live, it seemed to me like she was very sweet and down to earth. She’s been releasing music for a while, and seems determined to not let the industry change her or her music. Unbreakable Smile is a clear reflection of all of that. The album is a mix of pop and soul, and speaks on the ups and down on relationships, the importance of staying positive in life, and her refusal to conform to the industry. It’s a really awesome, fun album, perfect for the start of summer, but it’s also filled with great messages that we can all relate to in some way. With teens as Tori’s target audience, this is a great album for them to listen to, hopefully learn something from, and be inspired.

NEW MUSIC: "DFW"-Mosliano (Premiere)

Today, we are honored to premiere artist Mosliano's new song "DFW!"

The song itself is about truly living in the moment with someone, and not getting caught up in their past or even looking too far into the future. It's all about enjoying the time you have with him or her right now.

Mosliano admitted that it took a while to actually finish this song, not really having any type of inspiration. He received the beat back in 2013 from producer Sheikh Beatz, but didn't actually do anything with it until summer 2014. He ended up writing the chorus and a part of a verse, but struggled to finish because he didn't have any type of inspiration. "It wasn't until the beginning of this year, when an amazing woman came into my life at the right time, that I was able to finish," Mosliano stated. "We connected on a different level so quickly that writing the two verses came effortlessly." He created "DFW" as a conversational piece, talking directly to this special woman in his life.

CONCERTS: Tori Kelly's Where I Belong Tour Videos (The Fillmore Silver Spring)

I started listening to Tori Kelly a few years ago. I can't remember how I found her videos singing, but I did, and was awed by her talent! I bought her EPs, Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly and Foreword, and listened to any songs or covers of hers that I can find. If you haven't heard of her, you definitely need to check her out!

I had the opportunity to see Tori live on her Where I Belong Tour, which hit The Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD on June 19.  The tour also featured singer/songwriter Gavin James, who was amazing as well! Tori herself seemed like such a sweetheart, and really has a passion for music and storytelling through her songs. Her music is positive, real, and fun, and that's why I love her so much. She performed some of her older songs, as well as new tracks from her upcoming debut album, Unbreakable Smile, which drops on June 23! You can stream the album now on iTunes Radio (I'll also be reviewing for the blog as well)!

In The Spotlight: Mi'das

Today, we have London-based singer/songwriter Mi'das! The artist got his start in music at the age of 12, after learning a bit from his brother who played piano and his uncle who played guitar. "I also began to sing at school assemblies when I was quite young and that gave me the performing bug," Mi'das said. He eventually went off to a music college and realized there that he wanted to pursue his own music full time. "The people and music I was exposed to at college were big first inspirations," the singer stated. "From there, it's never stopped, and I'm constantly gaining new tastes and perspectives on things."

RECAP: "The Dead Episode"-The Game S9, E3

How are y'all liking this last season of The Game so far? I'm loving it personally! Picking up from last week, Tasha goes to the spa, and leaves her father to babysit the baby until Tee Tee gets there. Meanwhile, Tee Tee goes back to work at Phatty's to get the female servers in line. Malik is trying repeatedly to call Keira and make things right, but Tee Tee tells him that his and Keira's friendship is done. Malik truly believes Keira is the only one who he can keep it real with all the time, and is clearly smitten. However, Tee Tee tells him that he needs to let her go, apologize to Blue, and let them get back to their lives.

At the Pitts house, Brittany announces that she got into college and got a scholarship! Turns out the college she was accepted to is Florida A&M University, which is Chardonnay's alma mater. Chardonnay pushed Brittany to do well and fill out her college applications, and Brittany still has a good relationship with Chardonnay. Now Kelly is pissed about it. Jason himself is done with it all, trying to focus more on his interim head coach position.

Today, we have Wasimah Dorn, creator of women's boutique Cledgy Customs! The designer has always had a great love of fashion, and began designing her own looks, believing that it was a unique way to truly express herself. “I feel like your outfit says a lot about who you are, what you do/like, what mood you are in that day etc.,” Wasimah said. “I've always aspired to be different from everyone else.” She began getting great compliments on her style and questions about where she got her clothes, and people would ask if she could create looks for them as well. “That’s when it all clicked for me,” Wasimah said. “It’s like ‘Okay, well maybe I should start my business and stop playing.’”

Melissa Rivers Will Join Fashion Police

Melissa Rivers is set to join Fashion Police, which will return to E! this August!

According to Variety, Melissa will join Giuliana Rancic and Brad Goreski on the show. Melissa is taking the seat of her late mother, Joan Rivers, while still managing her same executive producer role. There will also be a new format which includes two rotating chairs, featuring two different celebrity guests with the hosts every episode.

MUSIC VIDEO: "Too Little Too Late"-Mi'das

Singer-songwriter Mi'das (who will be featured on the site later on in the week) has released the visual for his single "Too Little Too Late!" The song is the second single on Mi'das' Stronger EP.

According to Eurofied, Mi'das shared his feelings about the song and its meaning. "This song is about being afraid of getting old and having regrets about how you lived your life, about making too many compromises and not following your dreams," the singer said. "It’s one of my favorite songs because it mixes my soul and gospel influences with my love of songwriters and results in the song having a timeless feeling.”

MUSIC NEWS: Janet Jackson Announces World Tour

Miss Rhythm Nation is back as she announces her Unbreakable World Tour kicking off this August!

Not long after announcing that she'll be releasing a new album this fall, her first in seven years, under her own record label named Rhythm Nation Records, Janet Jackson has announced that she'll also be embarking on a world tour. The tour is being sponsored by Live Nation and it will make the seventh concert tour done by Janet in her career.

Only the first leg of the tour has been announced so far, which will cover 32 cities across Canada and the U.S., including Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Toronto, with the first show in Vancouver on August 31st. Concert dates for her international shows are to be announced at a later time.

Maleficent Reportedly Is Getting a Sequel

Angelina Jolie might just be returning in a sequel for Maleficent!

According to Deadline, Disney is working out the details behind a potential sequel, and Angelina, of course, is being kept in the loop about everything. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton and the original film's producer Joe Roth are also on board. Maleficent grossed close to $760 million worldwide.

"I loved being Maleficent,” Angelina told Entertainment Weekly in March 2014. "I was quite sad to put my staff down and put my horns away because somehow, she just lives in a different world," she added. "But I did have to take my staff home to practice walking with it in my cloak, and then I would go outside and scream at the bushes to expand my voice and play with my voice. So, Mom was a bit nutso for a period."

I would definitely check out the sequel! Maleficent was one of Angelina's best roles, and I would love to see her take on that character again.

From appearances on CNN to Real Time, Killer Mike’s penchant for politics runs deep. With a State Representative seat up for grabs in Georgia, he’s throwing his hat into the political fray. 

Mike said via Instagram. 

"In Atlanta Georgia there will be special election tomorrow for District 55. Former state representative Tyrone Brooks no longer sits in the seat. I would like as many people as possible to go to the polls and write in Michael Render. Why because if I win we win. Thank you now go vote"

In The Spotlight: KASH

Today, we have Caribbean/hip-hop star KASH! Born and raised in Called, Curepe in Northeast Trinidad, the artist admitted that he came from humble beginnings. However, he was inspired and motivated by his parents’ strong work ethic. “I saw my parents work and hustle every day, especially my father who had more than one job and had a natural ability to invest his earnings,” KASH said. “Seeing this, I was always intrigued by different ways of making money.” KASH’s love and appreciation for music began at a young age, as he was exposed to a variety of genres from hip-hop, reggae, and dancehall to rock and alternative. He would often visit his cousin’s house as well and watch shows like Rap City, 106 & Park and TRL, which further sparked his interest in music.

NEW PROJECT: Balladry-Jah' Bless

My fellow Moonz are so talented and inspirational, I promise you! Check out this new project from poet Jah' Bless entitled Balladry!

Combining his love of music with his great poetry, Jah' Bless came up with a great project in Balladry, choosing the name because the project is spoken word set to music, with each piece having something moving to say. "My inspiration behind this project was purely based on the need to escape a fear I had," he said. "I wanted to do this project to challenge myself in a way I haven't before." The poet already had material prepared, but the recording process was new to him. However, he was able to get all the instrumentals together and figure out recording over them himself.

Today, we have singer/songwriter Sean Love! Hailing from New Jersey, the singer started off singing in church like several other artists, and grew a love for music. About four years ago, Sean was in a group called Block Star, performing at local shows and gaining support. However, things went wrong on the business side of things, and Sean then decided to branch off as a solo artist.

RECAP: "Spin Control"-The Game S9, E2

This last season of The Game is definitely going to be good! Picking up from last week's season premiere, Kelly and Jason have a small wedding ceremony, renewing their vows with a preacher and Brittany recording.  Kelly jokes about having cold feet, scaring Jason, but she confesses her love and recommits to their marriage. They are husband and wife again! However, right before they kiss, Jason gets a call from Baby Rog, owner of the Sabers. He asks when Jason's trying to come back and handle Malik and Blue's messy situation in the midst of the wedding and Jason's own recent confession of using steroids! The Sabers organization is a mess, and Jason needs to get on his job.

NEW MUSIC: "Evolution of Wale (Vol.1)"-Jane Oranika

It's no secret how much I love and admire Wale. Literally, all you have to do is search his name on this blog!

I wanted to share a song from one of my fellow Moonz, Jane Oranika! She creatively and seamlessly put together a great blend of Wale's songs throughout his career entitled "Evolution of Wale (Vol. 1)". On the track, Jane sings snippets of Wale's biggest hits and some of his lesser known music as well, including "Letter," "90210," "Chillin," "LoveHate Thing," "Girls On Drugs," "Sabatage," "Bad," and more! Too many to even try to name, but it's amazing how she brought them all together for this track! It's already circulating social media, and it even got love from Wale himself!

TV NEWS: Raven-Symoné Named Permanent Co-Host of The View

After several months of appearing on The View as a "guest co-host", Raven-Symoné has been moved up to a permanent co-host position on the long-running daytime talk show.

The show's moderator Whoopi Goldberg made the announcement earlier on today's episode. It was a cause for celebration filled with confetti, hugs, and all around excitement from her fellow hosts and the audience.

Raven will be filling in Rosie O'Donnell's spot, who left the show 4 months ago to focus on family.

MOVIE TRAILER: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

It's going DOWN in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, the final film in this series! The first trailer was released today, and gives us an inside look at Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) leading District 13 to take down President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and the Capitol. Joining Katniss, is some of of the old crew including Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin). We see a lot of the same old characters, as well as some new, as the revolution against the Capitol continues!

Today, we have CEO of Masculine Footwear, Hasan Yates! The entrepreneur started in the shoe industry in September 2014. “I always wanted to create my very own shoe brand,” he said. “I got real serious about it and started doing my research on how to get started in the industry and found a manufacturer in Italy that met all my needs.” He then created footwear brand, Masculine Footwear, which offers products for both men and women!

Jennifer Hudson debuted her new video this week for her song "I Still Love You" off her third studio album JHUD that she released last September.

The video makes a statement on marriage equality and acceptance, a cause Jennifer has been in support of as she's working with Turn It Up For Change, a campaign sponsored by W Hotels that advocates for gay marriage.

Her powerful and award-winning vocals, along with the uptempo beat, may make one want to dance but it doesn't fail to send a message.

RECAP: "The Kiss Fallout Episode"-The Game Season 9 Premiere

The final season of The Game has started off with a bang!  Picking up from last season, Blue had started putting two and two together about Malik and Keira. Keira gets defensive, and ends up going to see Malik and the two make out heavy! We pick up right from that moment, where Malik and Keira come so close to getting it on, but manage to stop themselves. Blue comes over to his apartment, and the valet points out that Keira is there, which obviously pisses Blue off! Malik and Keira walk and get on the elevator, where Blue already is coming up to see them! At that moment, the sound cuts out and all we see is footage from the elevator! Blue and Malik clearly begin arguing, and  then end up fighting, while Keira stays curled up in a corner! Eventually, they are pulled away by hotel security, but not without a lot of blows thrown!

Today we have R&B singer Felixx! Originally from Monroe, Georgia, he grew up literally surrounded by family, with quite a few relatives living right next door! Felixx, like other musical artists, began singing in church (and still does). In elementary school, he began singing in different choirs, including classical, all of the way through high school. The singer was trained very well in the art of singing, learning diction, breathing and proper use of his vocal cords, which definitely helped him to become the great singer that he is today!

Iggy Azalea and Nick Young are taking things to the next level!  After two years of dating, Nick proposed to Iggy, and she said yes!


"She said yes. It’s over man. I’m getting married!” Nick wrote on Instagram below a photo of the couple kissing and Iggy showing off her engagement ring — which has been said to cost $500,000!
